How to make sloppy Joes three ways
I think we all have childhood memories of eating sloppy joes. I remember sitting in the lunch room at school hoping I wouldn’t get it all over my face. Yet, on the other hand, I was going to eat it no matter what! Whenever I make this dinner, I can’t help but think about the 8,999,999 times we watched the movie “It Takes Two”. You know, the one with the Olsen twins. The one where they refer to the sloppy joe as the big, sloppy, messy burger? Undeniably, despite the mess, it’s still one of my favorite things to eat!
Surprisingly, there is more than one way to serve up this delicious concoction Let me show you how we do it in our home.
The preferred way for the children is to heap it onto a squishy brioche bun. Don’t get me wrong, I like it too. However, my go to way of eating this mess of deliciousness is on a baked sweet potato! The adult version, may I say, is a little more nutritious and a lot less messy. The sweet potato has so many health benefits like being high in fiber and containing anti-inflammatory properties. They also support healthy vision and give a boost to the immune system.
Additionally, I have served sloppy joe with pasta, and over mashed potatoes or rice. At times, I have topped it with cheddar cheese, sour cream, pickled onions and pickled peppers. Although straight up sloppy joe on a bun or sweet potato is the best!
Another great way to utilize the sweet potato is to roast is and serve it alongside the sloppy joe sandwich.
How to roast cubed sweet potatoes
First, wash and cut up the sweet potato into chunks.
Next, line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Drizzle with olive oil and some seasonings.
For three large sweet potatoes I use: 2-3 tablespoons of olive or avocado oil, 2 teaspoon of chili powder (ancho, chipotle or regular chili) 1 tsp of smoked paprika, salt and pepper to taste
Roast them for about 30 minutes in a 425 degree preheated oven! Voila! Delicious!
How to bake a perfect sweet potato
Preheat an oven to 425 degrees
First, wash the potatoes. Poke 4-5 holes into the potato with a sharp knife or fork. Lightly coat the outside skin of the potato with avocado oil or olive oil and sprinkle with salt.
Place directly on the baking rack inside the oven and place a sheet of aluminum foil on the rack underneath to catch any drippings that may come out of the potato.
Bake for @ 45 minutes!
Lastly, split open and top with toppings of choice. Here, we use ground turkey sloppy joe sauce and a few slices of jalapeno. Enjoy!
First step in how to make sloppy joes
First chop the onions, celery, carrot, green pepper and garlic very finely in a chopper or with a knife.
Heat a pan. Place the oil in the pan and then add the veggies once the oil is hot. Cook the veggies for a few minutes to soften. Stop and enjoy the aroma!
Next, add the ground turkey to the veggie mixture and cook until the turkey is no longer pink. Add a teaspoon of salt to the meat mixture.
Add the ketchup, tomato sauce, mustard, brown sugar, and simmer on medium low heat for about 20 minutes.
Finally
Meanwhile, prepare your buns or sweet potatoes.
Finally, scoop onto the vessel of your choice: brioche bun, hamburger bun, hard roll, sweet potato etc.
Especially on a busy weeknight, this meal comes together quickly! It is packed with flavor and good, healthy ingredients that you can pronounce!
Certainly, you can substitute the ground turkey for ground beef or ground pork if desired, however the ground turkey is the perfect texture and flavor for this recipe.

Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoons of avocado oil ( Or oil of choice)
- 1 package of ground turkey ( 1 to 1 and 1/2 pounds)
- 8 ounce can tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons of yellow mustard

- Let the veggies cook for a few minutes to soften. This will take about 3 minutes.
- Add the ground turkey to the pan and cook until no longer pink (this should take less than 10 minutes) then add 1 teaspoon of salt.
- Next, add the ketchup, tomato sauce, mustard and brown sugar.
- Turn the heat down to medium low to simmer for about 20 minutes.
- The sloppy joes are great served on a baked sweet potato or on a brioche bun with roasted, cubed sweet potatoes on the side. See video for instructions on the sweet potato or refer back to blog for detailed instructions.
